Cocaine passed through Paraguay reaches US$25 billion

Drug gangs passed through Paraguay 470 tons of cocaine worth US$25 billion during the last three years, according to a parliamentary report reproduced today in Asunción.

Specialized agents seized these drugs from smugglers both in national territory and in Europe, adds a report presented by Senator Enrique Riera and published by media such as the newspaper HOY.

The 47 tons of this white powder drug confiscated in different latitudes since 2000 represents only 10% of the total of 470 tons trafficked through Paraguay, the report said.

The document, also submitted to United States authorities, details how organized crime strengthened its actions in the South American country until it became, from just a supplier of marijuana, the main base of operations for cocaine trafficking.

The proliferation of drug smuggling, Riera assured, increased during the government led by President Mario Abdo Benítez.
