Caribbean Prepares for Hurricane Beryl

The 2024 Atlantic season’s first hurricane, Beryl, rapidly intensified to a Category 4 by Sunday.

Formed late Friday, Beryl now poses an extreme danger, as reported by the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC). This prompted Caribbean nations to issue warnings and brace for impact.

Meteorologists expect “life-threatening winds and storm surges” in the Windward Islands.

In addition, these islands lie southeast of Puerto Rico and north of Venezuela. Beryl’s winds have reached 85 mph.

Barbados, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, the Grenadines, and Grenada have received warnings. Martinique and Tobago face tropical storm warnings, and Dominica is under watch.

This early formation of a storm so far east in June is unusual, said NHC meteorologist John Cangialosi. Such early storms in the central or eastern tropical Atlantic are historically rare.

Grenada’s Prime Minister, Dickson Mitchell, emphasized the seriousness, anticipating three months of rainfall in just 12 hours.

In Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves warned that 4 inches of rain could flood Kingstown.

In Bequia, Gladwyn Taylor, a seasonal restaurant operator, noted a relaxed mood but planned precautionary measures on Sunday.

Additionally, Barbados saw residents and visitors rush to stockpile essentials. Around 36,000 people attended the T20 Cricket World Cup final there on Saturday.

Meteorologists forecast an unusually active 2024 hurricane season. The NOAA predicts 17–25 named storms, above the average of 14.

However, this heightened activity stems from record-warm Atlantic temperatures and potential La Niña effects, which favor storm development.

The early and powerful emergence of Hurricane Beryl, along with an active season forecast, stresses the importance of readiness.

The unpredictability and intensity of weather patterns demand better preparedness to mitigate economic and social impacts on vulnerable areas, which is essential in the face of climate change.
