Brazil’s gross debt drops to 78.5% of GDP in March
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil’s gross debt fell 0.8 percentage points (p.p.) in March and reached 78.5% of the GDP (Gross Domestic Product). The Brazilian Central Bank (BC) released the result on Monday, May 16.
The Central Bank calculates the gross debt based on the federal government’s accounts, INSS (National Institute of Social Security), states, and municipalities. The March percentage was the lowest recorded since April 2020.
According to the monetary authority, the debt reduction is mainly due to the effects of the nominal GDP, which helped reduce it by 0.8 p.p., and to the exchange rate appreciation, which contributed to a 0.4 p.p. decrease.
In the accumulated first quarter, the debt fell 1.8 p.p.; in value, the debt was equivalent to R$7 trillion (US$1.4 trillion) in March.
