In 2023, Brazil achieved its highest energy sector growth in seven years, setting a new record.

This increase was mainly due to wind and solar power. The growth reached 10,324.2 megawatts (MW).

This information comes from the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL). ANEEL is in charge of regulating this sector.

The growth in 2023 went beyond ANEEL’s goal. The agency had set a target of 10,302.4 MW.

This achievement marks a big step since 2016. In that year, Brazil added 9,527.8 MW to its power generation.

Wind energy played a key role in this growth. In 2023, Brazil started using 140 new wind units.

These units added 4,919 MW. This number makes up almost half of the year’s total increase. ANEEL shared these details in a press release.

Solar power also had a significant impact. It increased by 4,070.9 MW. This boost came from 104 new solar plants. These plants contributed about 40% of the total increase.

Other sources also helped. These included 33 new thermal power stations. They added 1,214.9 MW.

Additionally, 11 new small hydroelectric plants brought in 158 MW. Three new hydroelectric plants contributed 11.4 MW.

ANEEL keeps the energy data updated daily. They use a system called SIGA for this.

After this increase in 2023, Brazil now has a big total power capacity. It has reached 199,324.5 MW. Experts expect this number to cross 200,000 MW soon.

ANEEL notes that most of Brazil’s power plants are renewable. Renewable plants make up about 84% of the total.

The largest share is from hydroelectric power, at 55%. Wind energy follows at 14%. Biomass and solar energy are also important. They make up 8% and 6%, respectively.
