Brazilian Auto Sector Starts 2025 with Growth in Exports, Decline in Sales
Brazil’s automotive sector opened 2025 with contrasting trends, reflecting both challenges and opportunities for stakeholders.
According to the National Association of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (Anfavea), vehicle production in January fell 7.7% compared to December 2024, with 175,541 units produced versus 190,131 the prior month.
However, on an annual basis, production rose by 15.1%, signaling a recovery from last year’s slower output. New vehicle sales showed a sharper monthly decline, dropping 33.5% to 171,248 units sold in January from 257,431 in December.
While this reflects seasonal adjustments and economic pressures, annual comparisons reveal a more positive trend, as sales grew 6% compared to January 2024. Exports offered a brighter spot for the industry.
Although shipments fell 8.5% month-over-month to 28,688 vehicles, they surged by 52.3% year-over-year. This growth underscores increasing international demand for Brazilian vehicles, particularly from neighboring markets.
Meanwhile, imports into Brazil declined significantly by 25.3% compared to December, aligning with the broader slowdown in domestic activity. Segment-specific performance varied.
Truck production dropped 24.7% month-over-month but managed a slight annual increase of 1.3%. Bus production rose consistently, up 6.6% from December and 13.2% year-over-year.
High interest rates and cautious consumer spending weighed on domestic demand, but Anfavea remains optimistic about the year ahead. The organization forecasts production growth of around 6.8% in 2025, supported by stronger exports and a gradual recovery in domestic sales.
These figures highlight critical market trends that could influence investors and policymakers as Brazil’s automotive sector navigates economic uncertainties while leveraging its export potential and evolving consumer preferences.
