Brazil will defend dialogue with Putin at G20 summit after Russia asks for support in letter
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil’s Ministry of Economy will take a position of dialogue with Russia in the talks within the G20 (Group of 20 largest economies in the world), the IMF (International Monetary Fund) and the World Bank.
This position will be represented by Minister Paulo Guedes at the meetings of the three organizations next week in Washington (USA). Guedes will travel there on Sunday (17).
Russia has been hit with unprecedented sanctions by Anglo-Saxon, Japan, and European countries after it invaded Ukraine and started a war there. In a letter sent to Guedes this week, Russia asked Brazil for support to avoid political accusations and alleged attempts at discrimination in multilateral fora.

The letter came just the week before meetings of the G20, IMF, and World Bank.
According to the Secretary of International Economic Affairs of the Ministry of Economy, Erivaldo Gomes, there is a consensus in the Ministry that the “bridges” built between countries in the economic space should not be destroyed. It is considered that “emotional attitudes” should be avoided at this time.
Since the beginning of hostilities in Eastern Europe, the Brazilian government has avoided confrontation with the government in Moscow. President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) visited Russian President Vladimir Putin in February, shortly before the war broke out. On that occasion, Bolsonaro, without mentioning Ukraine, said he was “in solidarity with Russia.”
In Brazil Bolsonaro defended a neutral position toward Russia. At the same time, Itamaraty supported a resolution against Russia in the United Nations (UN), General Assembly, in early March.
Recently, Brazil abstained from voting on Russia’s suspension from the UN Human Rights Council (HRC).
