Brazil: Santa Catarina State harvests the largest onion crop of the last years

Santa Catarina has already finished the 2022/23 harvest and accounts for more than 550,000 tonnes of onions, the largest volume of recent years, and keeps the state as the largest producer in the country.

The Notícias Agrícolas website released the information on Monday (27).

The increase in this estimate was pulled especially by the new figures in the Alto Vale do Itajaí region.

The microregion of Ituporanga should produce a little more than 250,000 tonnes, equivalent to about 50% of the state’s total.

Another good news for producers is the prices are above the production costs.

Despite the increased supply of onions since December, the values have remained between R$2.30 and R$2.50 per kilo in the main markets, such as Rio do Sul.

The commercialization continues normally, and the sold volume exceeds 50% of Santa Catarina’s production.

GARLIC

The garlic harvest in the state has also been completely harvested.

The data, which are in the final phase of consolidation by Epagri/Cepa, show an estimated production of more than 16 thousand tons.

The Santa Catarina producers are selling the product at a price lower than the production cost.

The prices paid to the producer in January significantly decreased compared to December.

Garlic classes 2 and 3 went from R$6 to R$4.60 per kilo, a reduction of almost 25%.

Garlic classes 4 and 5 had average prices of R$ 8.40 per kilo, a decrease of approximately 30%. Garlic classes 6 and 7 were commercialized at a little more than R$10, a reduction of 8.70%.

WHEAT

The wheat harvest in Santa Catarina is around 500,000 tonnes, a volume approximately 40% bigger than the last cycle when the State harvested almost 350,000 tonnes.

The average monthly price paid to the producer dropped 3% in January, compared to December, closing the monthly average at R$87 a 60-kilo bag.

In the yearly comparison, the prices received in January of this year are almost 2% below those registered in 2022.

RICE

The rice harvest is 8% behind the previous two harvests because of the prolonged cold period.

So far, the state has harvested almost 15% of production. Epagri/Cepa estimates a harvest of 1.2 million tonnes, a drop of -1% compared with the last cycle.

BEANS

By the first week of February, approximately 25% of the area planted with first-crop beans had already been harvested in the state.

As for the second-crop beans, about 20% had been sown.

The first crop of beans, called the harvest of the waters, represents about 51% of the planted area, while the second crop of beans, also called the dry season, accounts for 49% of the total area in Santa Catarina.
