SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL – There is a good reason why São Paulo is the largest city in the southern hemisphere, the most important economic, financial and industrial center of Latin America, and a world hub in art, culture, and gastronomy.

This problem-ridden metropolis, unlike all other South American cities, is incredibly ambitious, has deep pockets, and is making every effort to become one of the most important cities in the world.

That is why João Doria, the governor of São Paulo, announced on Wednesday, August 21st, the founding of the Center for the 4th Industrial Revolution, to be located at the Institute of Technological Research (IPT), in the capital city of São Paulo.

The office facility is a partnership between the state government, Brazil’s Ministry of Economy and the World Economic Forum (WEF), which signed a term of commitment today.

“The Center will design and guide innovative policies. As part of the Forum’s global network, teams will exchange knowledge and scale global learning,” said Marisol Argueta de Barillas, director for Latin America and member of the World Economic Forum’s Board of Directors.

“The 4th Industrial Revolution is a subject that perfectly attends to the Brazilian government’s expectations and those of the São Paulo state government,” said Doria, at the Palácio dos Bandeirantes.

The establishment of the entity in Brazil will be officially confirmed at the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos, in January 2020, and the inauguration of the space in the São Paulo capital will take place during the World Economic Forum for Latin America, in May 2020.

"The 4th Industrial Revolution is a subject that perfectly attends to the Brazilian government's expectations and those of the São Paulo state government," said Doria, at the Palácio dos Bandeirantes.

Under the measure, according to the state government, Brazil is included in the network dedicated to the global governance of technology, joining China, Japan, India, Colombia, Israel, UAE, and the United States — countries where there is already a center for research and global oversight of technology on the 4th Industrial Revolution.

“To achieve an impact and drive change in the context of the 4th Industrial Revolution, it is essential to link the government, business organizations, startups, civil society, academia, and international organizations to develop smart and innovative policies,” said Patrícia Ellen, the State Secretary for Economic Development. For the state government, the initiative is in line to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship.

The IPT, linked to the state’s Secretariat for Economic Development, recently opened its campus for private companies to work together with startups, clients, suppliers, researchers, investors, and government agencies.
