5G technology now available in 102 municipalities in the state of São Paulo

Just over a year since the introduction of 5G in Brazil, 102 municipalities in the state of São Paulo now have access to this technology, which can be up to 100 times faster than 4G.

The latest Anatel (National Telecommunications Agency) survey, with data updated until June, showed that 5G coverage was available in 184 cities nationwide.

In São Paulo, 320 municipalities have been approved or pre-approved for use of the 3.5 GHz band, with service providers now able to license stations.

The state government, the Secretary of Economic Development, and the InvestSP investment agency are facilitating the implementation process in the remaining cities.

According to InvestSP, twice as many São Paulo municipalities updated their legislation in 2023 as the previous year.

From January to July of this year, 154 cities adopted the changes, compared to 61 in 2022.

The Ministry of Communications aims to expand 5G coverage nationwide by 2029 in Brazil.

At a public hearing held on May 23, Minister Juscelino Filho emphasized that expanding the internet network is a challenge, given that 20% of the population currently lacks internet access.

On Monday, July 31, 2023, Anatel allowed an additional 102 municipalities to access 5G technology.

However, this does not guarantee immediate 5G operation, as it depends on the operators’ licensing requests and station activation.
