Uruguay bets to be an example of renewable energy in Latin America

Uruguay has a strong renewable energy matrix that can be an example for other countries in the region, said the National Director of Energy of the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining, Fitzgerald Cantero, in an interview with Sputnik news agency.

“Uruguay has an outstanding role [in the face of the energy challenges in the region] for all that its renewable matrix means (…), which has allowed it to be in the first places when it comes to seeing the things that have been done so that in any case in some countries we can try to go down the same path”, stated Cantero in the framework of the international conference “From the regional to the global: Latin America” which is being held in Punta del Este.

Regarding the immediate future, Cantero highlighted Uruguay’s intention to adjust its energy expansion plans by installing a new generation, which, he estimated, “will be on the renewable solar and photovoltaic side”.

On February 2, the official will participate in the event organized by the Global Energy association on the energy problems of Latin America, an international meeting with scientists and personalities in the energy field.

Global Energy, based in Moscow, has been awarding the annual prize of the same name since 2003 for outstanding scientific research and advances in the energy field.

The Director of Energy celebrated that his country is hosting this event, considering it serves to share experiences, exchange ideas and analyze the lessons learned.

Within the framework of the conference, awards will be presented to the American Kaushik Rajashekara, winner of the Global Energy Prize 2022, and the honorary diploma of the association to the Uruguayan Ruben Chaer.
