Accident Between Bus and Van Leaves One Dead, Over 40 Injured

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A man died and 47 people were injured after an accident between a bus and a van at km 209 of BR-386, in Tio Hugo, Northern region of Rio Grande do Sul on Sunday, November 3rd.

According to information from the Federal Highway Police, around 6 AM, the van had crossed over into the opposite lane of the highway, causing a frontal collision between the vehicles.

After the crash, the bus went off the road. The driver of the van, Luís Carlos da Silva Marques, 63, died on the spot. He is being investigated by the police for allegedly setting fire to his own home at dawn in Capivari do Sul.

The bus driver and passengers were injured and rushed to hospitals in the nearby cities of Carazinho, Soledade, and Passo Fundo. According to the PRF, 43 passengers are reportedly lightly injured, seven are in fair condition and four are in critical condition.

The bus’ occupants were on their way to Porto Alegre to attend the classic Gre-Nal [Gremio/Internacional] soccer match. whose start was scheduled for 6 PM at Arena do Grêmio.

Traffic on the site was restricted to a single lane, with alternating flow. The van, with a Capivari do Sul plate, traveled in the direction of the capital, and the bus, from Quedas do Iguaçu, in Paraná, was headed in the opposite direction.
