Ten People Killed and 51 Injured in Bus Accident in São Paulo State

SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL – Emergency workers say a bus accident in the Brazilian state of São Paulo has left ten dead and 51 injured on Sunday night, June 9th. According to the police, five of the fatalities were women, three men, and two children.

The accident took place outside of Campos do Jordão, a popular tourist destination in a mountainous area near the city of São Paulo.

The bus was carrying 40 people and collided with five cars and a motorcycle on the  State Highway SP-123 in Pindamonhangba, São Paulo state.

Local firefighters say they were called to rescue victims of a crash involving a bus and at least three cars. They say they don’t have information about the identities of the victims yet.

Witnesses informed the police that one of the cars drove recklessly, which caused the accident.

About 41,000 people died on Brazil’s roads in 2016, according to estimates in the World Health Organization’s 2018 global road safety report.
