Ministers of Economy and Energy resign from Guatemalan government

The ministers of Economy and Energy and Mines in Guatemala have resigned from their positions within President Alejandro Giammattei’s government, according to an official source.

Janio Rosales, who served as the Minister of Economy, held his position for 15 months, while Alberto Pimentel, the Minister of Energy and Mines, assumed office in January 2020.

Rosales faced criticism last year for approving the hiring of a law firm to investigate government officials who had been sanctioned by the United States under the Engel List.

The resignations come after Giammattei’s political party, Vamos, secured third place in the recent presidential elections held on June 25, with their candidate Manuel Conde, a lawyer.

As a result of these resignations, President Giammattei will need to appoint replacements for the positions of Economy and Energy and Mines to serve the remainder of his term, which concludes on January 14 next year.

Rosales had taken over the role of Minister of Economy in April 2022, following the departure of businessman Antonio Malouf.

Since assuming office on January 14, 2020, Giammattei has made more than 15 changes to his Cabinet ministers.
