Surging brew: Brazil’s coffee exports to China skyrocket 102.7% in first half of 2023

In 2023, Brazil’s coffee shipments to China saw a remarkable rise of 102.7% in the first seven months, as reported by Brazil’s Coffee Export Council (CECAFÉ) on Wednesday (9th).

From January to July, China imported 408,046 bags, each weighing 60 kilograms, from Brazil, the globe’s top coffee producer and exporter.

During the announcement of the monthly coffee trade report, CECAFÉ’s President, Márcio Ferreira, highlighted China’s notable performance, now ranking 13th among countries importing Brazilian coffee.

CECAFÉ notes that July’s sales to China contributed to an overall 18.7% export growth compared to the previous month.

This rise is attributed to the export of 2,991,495 bags in July 2023, an increase from 2,520,611 bags in July 2022.

However, there was a 14.7% decrease in exports in the first seven months of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022.

Exports to the U.S. decreased by 26.5% in the first seven months of the year compared to the prior year, but exports to Asia grew by 25.3%, highlighting the region’s emerging significance in the coffee trade.
