Delegates of the Brazilian Federal Police will carry out strikes to put pressure on the government

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The delegates of the PF (Federal Police) decided to carry out strikes to pressure President Jair Bolsonaro to implement the restructuring of the career.

This decision was taken at the General Assembly of the ADPF (National Association of Deputies of the Federal Police), which closed on Tuesday (3).

According to the association, the strikes will partially and gradually affect certain agency services. A calendar of dates and activities to be suspended has yet to be determined.

Another proposal approved by the assembly was the request for the resignation of Minister of Justice and Public Security, Anderson Torres.

The delegates refer to the “discrediting and disrespectful treatment of the Federal Police and the Minister himself by the President of the Republic.” Torres is a PF delegate.

The commissioners also agreed to the possibility of relinquishing top posts and rejecting invitations to take new ones.

The primary demand is to restructure the career path with changes in the configuration of positions and development criteria. According to their estimates, the change would bring a salary increase of between 16% and 20%.

Bolsonaro had made the promise to the police, but its effectiveness is still uncertain.

“The ADPF underscores the seriousness of the situation and the position of the President of the Republic, who, after publicly committing himself with a budget already earmarked for the restructuring of careers, decided not to keep his word, triggering a climate of revolt and discontent never seen before among PF personnel,” reads an excerpt from the communication.

Federal government security officials have been lobbying for the demand. On April 28, they organized a nationwide mobilization to call on the president to restructure the staff.

All states and the Federal District had organized actions in front of regional PF supervisors. In Brasília, representatives gathered at the company’s headquarters in the northern commercial sector starting at 9 am.

About 300 people participated, including union leaders, police officers, and representatives of companies.

The government has earmarked R$1.7 billion (US$340 million) from the 2022 budget for salary adjustments and restructuring. Despite the blockage of part of the budget, the amount was maintained, but it is not enough to meet all the categories that demand an increase.

However, the amount resulted from negotiations in the government to grant restructuring for police officers.

The possible measure in favor of the security forces displeased other categories of the federal public service. The companies organized strikes and walkouts against the situation.

On April 13, the government hinted at the possibility of granting a 5% adjustment to all public employees.

The professionals of the federal security forces expressed surprise and unhappiness with this solution.

At the end of April, the representative organizations of PF workers issued a statement rejecting President Bolsonaro’s remarks and saying they considered the possibility of a retreat in the restructuring “serious” and “inadmissible.”
