Brazil opens investigation on Bolsonaro government’s responsibility in Yanomami humanitarian crisis

The Federal Public Ministry (MPF) opened on Monday (30) a procedure to investigate the responsibility of the Brazilian State in the humanitarian crisis of the Yanomami people in Roraima.

In a statement, the body said it intends to analyze “how the actions and omissions of managers and politicians may have contributed to the current situation of communities living in the Yanomami Indigenous Land”.

The public agents were the target of representations made by political parties and civil society organizations forwarded to the unit in Roraima.

The MPF considers that there is already a vast body of evidence for the “immediate accountability of the Brazilian state”.

“This body of evidence reveals a clear picture of widespread lack of health care, systematic noncompliance with court orders to repress invaders of the indigenous territory, and repeated actions by state agents capable of encouraging violations to the life and health of the Yanomami people,” says the document that determines the establishment of the civil investigation.

The MPF said it intends to determine the exact extent of the humanitarian crisis, the clarification of its causes and socio-environmental impacts, as well as the degree of involvement of each public official.

Also on Monday (30), the Justice of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Luís Roberto Barroso, ordered the opening of an investigation against officials of the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government for the alleged crime of genocide of indigenous peoples.
