Brazil: Lula chooses General Amaro to command the Security Cabinet

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva confirmed the name of General Marcos Antônio Amaro dos Santos to assume the command of the Institutional Security Cabinet (GSI).

The official invitation was made this Wednesday, November 3, during a meeting with the Minister of Defense, José Múcio Monteiro, and General Amaro himself.

The military man, who had already worked as responsible for the security of former president Dilma Rousseff, participated in the creation of the Military House during her mandate – but left the post after the impeachment process against the president – and worked in the GSI during the period when Fernando Henrique Cardoso was in power.

Amaro will replace General Gonçalves Dias, who resigned on April 19 after images were released showing Dias and other GSI agents during the acts of vandalism on January 8.

Until now, the portfolio has been under the interim command of Ricardo Cappelli, who also served as a federal intervenor in the public security of the Federal District after the violent demonstrations.

Since he took over on an interim basis, Cappelli has planned a restructuring of the GSI, which will be presented to Lula.

At the end of April, at least 146 cabinet officials were dismissed.

Amaro is a nominee of the Army Commander, General Tomás Paiva.

The acceptance of the invitation comes on the same day that Lula will be received with ceremonies for lunch at the Army headquarters with the High Command.
