Brazil: Investments in agrotech will exceed US$50 million by 2022

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – In Brazil, the agrotechs, technology-based startup companies dedicated to agribusiness operations inside and outside the farm gate, received US$54.7 million in investments between January and the first half of this month, informs the Distrito platform in a report. The amount is equivalent to a little more than half of the total contributions of all of last year when they totaled US$109.2 million.

There were, in all, ten rounds of investments in the partial 2022, a number much lower than in the same period in 2021, when 34 operations occurred. The survey does not mention the volume of investments between January and the first half of May last year.

Since 2009, startups in precision agriculture have received more than half of the investments made in agrotechs in the country, according to Distrito. The companies in the segment attracted investments of US$170.18 million in this period.

The report highlights that, in other countries, there are already agrotechs specializing in biotechnology and “novel farming” (new ways of doing agriculture) with a market value exceeding US$1 billion – the so-called unicorns. “Considering the potential of strategic sectors, we believe there is room for further diversification as more investors turn their attention to Brazilian agrotechs,” says Distrito.
