Brazil: In 2022, basic basket rose in the 17 capitals surveyed by Dieese
Last year, the basic basket was more expensive in the 17 Brazilian capitals analyzed by the National Research of the Basic Basket, which is released monthly by the Inter-union Department of Statistics and Socioeconomic Studies (Dieese).
In Goiânia, the price of the basket rose 17.89% in 2022 compared to the previous year, the highest increase recorded by the survey. Then came Brasília (17.25%), Campo Grande (16.03%) and Belo Horizonte (15.06%).
The lowest increases accumulated last year were observed in Recife (6.15%) and Aracajú (8.99%).

When considering only the month of December, the value of the basic basket rose in 14 of the 17 capitals analyzed by the survey, with emphasis on Fortaleza (3.70%), Salvador (3.64%) and Natal (3.07%). There was only price drop in Porto Alegre (-2.03%), Curitiba (-1.58%) and Florianópolis (-0.90%).
In December, the most expensive basket in the country was in São Paulo, where it sold, on average, for R$791.29. Next, there were baskets from Florianópolis (R$769.19) and Porto Alegre (R$765.63). The cheapest was in Aracaju, where it cost, on average, R$521.05.
Based on the value of the most expensive basket [which in December was the one in São Paulo] and taking into account the constitutional determination that establishes that the minimum wage must be sufficient to meet the expenses of a worker and his family with food, housing, health, education, clothing, hygiene, transport, leisure and social security, Dieese estimated the ideal minimum wage at R$6,647.63, or 5.48 times greater than the current value of R$1,212.
