Censorship in Brazil: Justice Council removes a judge from office for expressing dissenting opinions on social networks

Under the presidency of Justice Rosa Weber, the National Council of Justice (CNJ) decided unanimously on Tuesday afternoon (14) to remove Judge Ludmila Lins Grilo.

The decision was made under the presidency of the Minister of Internal Affairs, Luis Felipe Solomon, and cited opinions of the judge expressed in her social networks, lectures, and other public manifestations that were considered inappropriate to the function.

In addition to accusations linked to her political views, Ludmilla was accused of not attending court, having too many stalled cases, and having “low productivity”.

In a unanimous decision, the councilors opened a Disciplinary Administrative Proceeding (PAD) against the magistrate and ordered her precautionary removal from her duties.

The corrector listed the judge’s speeches and posts about politics and the judiciary’s functions, which the Council considers inappropriate to the position.

Among the manifestations, the rapporteur cited the conservative conference The Price of Freedom, where the judge participated as a speaker.

The judge had already been persecuted by decisions of Justice Alexandre de Moraes of the STF when her online course was demonetized and taken offline.

Ludmilla has become notorious in recent years for defending the freedom of speech and against abusive decisions amid the pandemic, such as imposing the use of masks, recently confirmed to be ineffective by the Federal Council of Medicine, and requiring vaccines for covid, associated with cases of myocarditis and stroke.

The members of the CNJ, however, classified the judge’s speeches as “irresponsible,” and her participation in lectures seen as “of a partisan political nature” was inappropriate, which, according to the rapporteur, is forbidden in the exercise of the judiciary.
