Brazil aims to reach 2030 with 30% renewable fuels for motor vehicles

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil is currently ranked second in the world in biodiesel production and is the largest producer of ethanol from sugar cane, said the Ministry of Mines and Energy’s (MME) Secretary of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels, José Mauro Coelho.

Brazil’s energy and transportation matrix is one of the cleanest in the world, according to Secretary Mauro Coelho. About 25% of the fuel it uses comes from renewable sources, and the goal is to reach 2030 with a 30% share. “This is unique in the world.”

The Fuel of the Future program will be partly responsible for this increase. Launched in April this year, it aims to increase the share of renewable and low-emission fuels in Brazil’s energy matrix and to develop national vehicle technologies.

“Brazil has greatly advanced in Flex Fuel vehicles, in the use of biofuels. In this energy transition period we have to further develop this vehicle technology.” Another goal is to develop new biofuels: “We are looking ahead and searching for new fuels that can be introduced in our energy matrix, in our transportation matrix,” he said.

According to Coelho, the biofuels market is now a reality in cargo transportation with the use of biodiesel. Other options are green diesel, which is being used in Europe, natural gas and biomethane.

He said the goal is to develop options for the aviation and waterway sectors through the Fuel of the Future program. In the case of aviation, biokerosene will be used.

The Fuel of the Future program also provides incentives for Oil and Natural Gas operators to invest in research and development.
