Botafogo Seizes Brasileirão Lead as Flamengo and Bahia Falter

On Sunday, Botafogo ascended to the top of the Campeonato Brasileiro with a 2-1 victory over Gremio, aided by draws from Flamengo and Bahia.

Botafogo, previously third, struck first at Kleber Andrade stadium in Vitória’s metro area. Cuiabano scored at 9 minutes.

Gustavo Nunes equalized for Gremio at 21 minutes. Júnior Santos secured Botafogo’s win at 56 minutes.

This victory pushed Botafogo to 19 points, one more than their nearest rivals. Gremio, now with six points, fell to 17th place, entering the relegation zone.

Cuiabá delivered the largest win of the round, thrashing Fortaleza 5-0.

Goals from Pitta, Cafu, Clayson, Ramon, and Sobral Dourado lifted Cuiabá out of the relegation zone, placing them 14th with seven points. Fortaleza stayed 12th with ten points.

Atlético Goianiense distanced themselves from relegation, climbing five places to 13th with eight points after a 2-1 win over Fluminense at Maracanã.

Fluminense, last year’s Copa Libertadores champion, is in a serious slump, now second-to-last with six points, tied with Gremio, Criciúma, and bottom-placed Vitoria.

Vitoria secured their first Brasileirao win by beating Internacional 2-1.

Bragantino beat Juventude 2-1 on Saturday, reaching sixth place with 18 points. Juventude sits 11th with ten points.

The round concludes Monday with Atlético Mineiro, ninth with 13 points, facing Palmeiras, seventh with 14 points.
