Bolsonaro promises real increase in minimum wage in 2023

The Brazilian president and candidate for reelection, Jair Bolsonaro (PL, right), said on Thursday (Oct. 20) that he will grant a real gain, above inflation, to the minimum wage if he is reelected.

The Head of the Executive also promised a readjustment for public employees. According to him, the measures have the endorsement of the Minister of Economy, Paulo Guedes.

“Just now Paulo Guedes, given this, announced that next year there will be a real increase in the minimum wage and a real increase for public servants as well,” said Bolsonaro in an interview with the podcast Inteligência Ltda.

Guedes said on Thursday that the government is studying to pass on inflation to wages and is evaluating ways to grant an actual increase in 2023 if the president is reelected.

In the podcast, Bolsonaro talked about the subject more than once. The 2nd time, he stated that “the real value” of the salary would be readjusted.

“Inflation, for example, was 5%. You will get 6% more, at least; you can get 7% and 8% more. […] You will have a real increase, more than inflation. A real increase is more than inflation. That is the guaranteed statement of Paulo Guedes,” he said.

Bolsonaro called “fake news” the idea that he would decrease the minimum wage.

He attributed the statement to congressman André Janones (Avante-MG), whom he called “Lula’s marketeer”.

Earlier on Thursday, the Ministry of Economy denied having the intention to change the current rules for adjusting the minimum wage and pensions to inflation.

“There is no reason to reduce the minimum wage. There is no such thing. Who would vote for a proposal to reduce the minimum wage?”

So, it was fake news preached by that guy, a Janones guy, the poster boy, Lula’s marketeer.

“And Paulo Guedes has just made the statement that the minimum wage will be readjusted, starting next year, the real value. As well as the public servant”, he declared.

The audience of the interview with the president on Thursday exceeded 1.7 million people following it live.

The number surpassed the one reached by Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT, left) in the Flow Podcast, which reached 1,093,402 viewers.
