Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro made a commitment on Thursday to Vice President-elect Geraldo Alckmin to the government transition process to allow the inauguration of President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Jan. 1.

“The president reiterated commitments of his officials regarding the transition, marked by transparency, planning, and predictability,” Alckmin told the press after meeting with the president at the Planalto Palace, the seat of government, in Brasília.

Alckmin was at the Government House meeting to initiate the transition with the chief of Cabinet of ministers, Ciro Nogueira, an occasion in which Bolsonaro spoke with the vice president-elect.

“It was something positive; the president told me to go to his office where he expressed the government’s willingness to provide information so that the transition is marked by public interest,” said Alckmin.

Da Silva appointed Alckmin to head the government transition, accompanied by the president of the Workers’ Party, Gleisi Hoffmann, and the program coordinator of the government that won Sunday’s elections, Aloizio Mercadante.

Bolsonaro’s statement comes a day after he called on thousands of supporters who refused to recognize da Silva’s victory to interrupt the protests with road blockades because it was illegal and caused economic losses.

Da Silva, who governed Brazil between 2003 and 2010, with a re-election in 2006, managed to access a third term by defeating Bolsonaro in the second round of elections on Sunday, Oct. 30, according to the Superior Electoral Court TSE.
