Bolivia has renewed its request to be installed as a full member of Mercosur
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Bolivian president, Luis Arce, who participated in the summit of heads of state of the Southern Cone trade bloc, reaffirmed the country’s will and thanked, without mentioning them, those who have already ratified the accession protocol, whose entry into force depends on the confirmation of the Brazilian Senate.

Bolivia reaffirmed its will to join Mercosur as a full member, nine years after the signing of the accession protocol which has not yet been ratified by all the members of the bloc.
“Allow me to reiterate once again Bolivia’s will to be part of Mercosur as a full member”, said Bolivian President Luis Arce, while participating in the summit of Mercosur heads of state held on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the bloc’s creation.
Arce thanked, without mentioning them, the countries that have already ratified Bolivia’s accession protocol, whose entry into force depends on the confirmation of the Brazilian Senate.
“We consider that Bolivia’s accession represents an opportunity to strengthen Mercosur, contribute to the integration of the South American continent and contribute to the convergence of Mercosur with the Pacific Ocean,” Arce said.
In this sense, he expressed that “only through integration” it will be possible to face the challenges ahead and overcome the enormous economic and social crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
The meeting, organized from Buenos Aires, was held with the presidents of the full member countries: Alberto Fernández, who holds the pro tempore presidency of the bloc; Brazil’s Jair Bolsonaro; Paraguay’s Mario Abdo Benítez and Uruguay’s Luis Lacalle Pou.
Also in attendance were the presidents of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, as an associate state, and of Bolivia, Luis Arce, in the process of full incorporation into the bloc.
