The President of the Republic of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, in the framework of the virtual summit of Mercosur presidents on the 30th anniversary of the regional bloc, reaffirmed the commitment to work together with Argentina in the project that seeks to link South America with the Asia Pacific region by means of a submarine fiber optic cable.

The president, along with pointing out the importance of physical connectivity in the region, said that progress must be made in “digital integration, we look forward to Argentina’s participation in the submarine fiber optic cable project that will link South America with the Asia Pacific world, which will allow us to have a faster, safer and more efficient connection and not have to go through countries in the North to connect with countries in the Asia Pacific, as we do today.”

Piñera took the opportunity to “invite the other countries of the region to join this project that will allow us connectivity, with 5G technology, to connect us with greater speed than today.”

The Argentine president, Alberto Fernández, said that he had indeed discussed the issue with Piñera about “a submarine cable for better connectivity with Asia, in times when communication is essential.”
