Biden’s National Security Advisor to visit Brazil and Argentina

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan will travel to Brazil and Argentina this week on his first visit to the region with an agenda that includes strengthening the partnership with those countries, “regional stability,” and post-pandemic economic recovery.

The official will be accompanied by the senior director for the Western Hemisphere of the National Security Council and special advisor to U.S. President Joe Biden for Latin America, Juan González, and the State Department’s special envoy for the Northern Triangle, Ricardo Zúñiga, said National Security Council spokeswoman Emily Horne in a statement.

It was not specified, however, when the U.S. officials will begin or conclude their visit.

Sullivan will meet with leaders of “important allies” outside NATO in the Americas, the statement added.

The United States has designated Argentina (1998) and Brazil (2019) as major non-NATO allies. Colombia is since 2018 the only Latin American country that is a global partner of that body.

In Brazil, the U.S. delegation will discuss opportunities to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two countries, enhance regional stability, advance climate goals, collaborate on digital infrastructure, and help forge a path in recovery from the covid-19 pandemic, said the note.

While in Argentina, the visit will strengthen strategic ties on bilateral and regional priorities, including pandemic recovery, shared economic growth, and hemispheric and global security.

Senior Director of Technology and Homeland Security Tarun Chhabra and Senior Director of Cybersecurity Amit Mital will also be part of the entourage.
