49 Years of Independence: Cabo Verde’s Journey and Challenges

On July 5, Cape Verde commemorates 49 years of independence from colonial rule. The movement, led by Amílcar Cabral, sought a self-sustaining nation.

However, many Cape Verdeans today feel the country still relies heavily on external support and struggles with internal development.

Retired Colonel Júlio Monteiro, who raised the flag on Independence Day in 1975, reflects on the nation’s progress.

He believes Amílcar Cabral’s ideals remain unfulfilled, highlighting issues like youth emigration, tourism policies favoring foreigners, and reliance on imports.

Cape Verde faces severe droughts, forced emigration, food insecurity, poor inter-island connectivity, and low wages.

Paulo Varela, spokesperson for the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV), stresses the need for self-sufficiency.

The major challenge remains producing enough food to feed the population and reducing dependence on imports, which currently account for 80 to 90% of consumed goods.

Varela warns that past famines in 1920 and 1947 could recur if global conflicts arise.

He calls for developing a national fishing fleet and improving agriculture to bolster food production. These steps are essential for the “second phase of independence.”

Health, education, agriculture, infrastructure, and youth employment need significant improvement.

Challenges and Aspirations in Cape Verde

Environmental activist and educator Nelson Santos acknowledges the progress made but stresses the need for continued efforts. These years mark significant economic and social achievements.

However, ongoing challenges like democratic tolerance, inter-island transport, environmental protection, justice, and sustainable agriculture still require attention.

President José Maria Neves defends Cape Verde‘s progress but calls for enhanced political engagement and democratic consolidation.

Elevating political debate with strong arguments and discussing issues affecting the people, such as transport, poverty, inequality, and unemployment, is crucial.

Achieving consensus and understanding in critical moments is necessary for the proper functioning of institutions.
