“We Have Everything Needed to Remove Bolsonaro in 2022” Says ex-President Lula

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Ex-President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Worker’s Party – PT) said yesterday in an interview that he believes PT have all the prerequisite conditions for President Jair Bolsonaro not to be re-elected in 2022.

In his statement, Lula did not specifically mention any PT candidate, but rather the political class in general, since, according to him, the country has “many people better” than the current President.

“I am convinced that we have all the prerequisities to remove Bolsonaro. There was a time in Brazil when hope overcame fear. In the case of Bolsonaro, ignorance overcame intelligence. It is impossible that people do not realize that Brazil has many better people,” he said.

The leftist former president now depends on the STF (Federal Supreme Court) to decide on his claim of partiality by ex-judge Sérgio Moro. The party’s goal is to overturn the lawsuits that convicted Lula, which would enable his a potential presidential candidacy in 2022.

But even if he fails to regain his political rights, Lula says he will be helping in some way.

“I will be in the race, whatever the position. From right wing to left wing, I will be playing to restore democracy in our beloved country.”

The decision involving ex-Minister of Justice Moro will be held following a writ of habeus corpus by Lula, in which his defense counsel petitions for the annulment of the convictions handed down by Moro as a result of the Lava Jato operation investigations.

The ex-president’s attorneys argue that the ruling may not have been impartial, because Moro was later appointed a cabinet Minister by President Bolsonaro, and also because, as a judge, Moro acted in concert with the prosecution, as evidenced by conversations leaked through “The Intercept Brasil” website.
