USA World Cup Match Viewing Party Tonight in Rio: Daily

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – At 7PM tonight, June 16th, the USA will take on Ghana for their first group game of the 2014 World Cup and the match will be broadcast live at the Gringo Café in Ipanema as part of the Rio World Cup MixUp events.

Tonight’s event is the second of six USA and England group game viewing parties hosted by The Rio Times with co-hosts, the U.S. Consulate General, the American Society of Rio de Janeiro (AmSoc Rio), The British & Commonwealth Society of Rio (BCS), and the British Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Brazil (Britcham).

The first event took place on Saturday, June 14th with England playing Italy. “The event [Saturday] was super exciting, friends and guests were thrilled,” said Joy Fagundes, advertising and marketing manager for The Rio Timess on Sunday, adding, “[Monday] we will have more excitement with our partners from the U.S. Consulate and guests.

To add to the excitement of the evening, Fagundes explains, “We’ll raffle prizes for those who reserve their tables to watch the game and consume more than R$50 worth of food and drinks.”

Prizes will include a necklace from the Glória Erthal Joias da Natureza jewelry line, and a bag featuring a U.S. flag produced by well known Rio designer Gilson Martins. Both Gilson Martins and Gloria Erthal Bio-Jewelry are co-sponsors of the Rio World Cup MixUp events, along with Cachaça Magnífica and Budweiser. Those who attend all three American group games will also be eligible the raffle of an official Liga Retrô shirt.

Promotions during the match tonight will again include bottles of beers for only R$5 and caipirinhas and caipivodkas for only R$10. DJ Slim Seleem will return to play before, during breaks, and after the game. Additionally, VIP seats with the best views of the large screen TV are again available. Those seats are by reservation only and there is a R$50 minimum consumption per person.

“I love the idea of viewing parties,” Anna Whyte of AmSoc Rio and BCS told The Rio Times.”I think expats living here and visitors from other countries, especially from the USA and the UK, are looking for places in Rio where they can relax, find a friendly crowd that speaks English and enjoys cheering on their home teams together.”
