A Uruguay teen found in Argentina on Sunday 18 October 2026 is now at the centre of a cross-border human-trafficking case. Argentine prosecutors said on Tuesday 20 October that the 15-year-old is in good health and that the 37-year-old man detained with her refused to testify.

US parents will recognise parts of the pattern the prosecutors describe: an Amber alert, contact through an online game and a messaging app, and an adult who allegedly ran escort advertising sites. This report does not name the girl or her family, because the prosecutor in Paysandú asked the public to respect their privacy.

Everything below about the suspect is an allegation, and he has not been convicted of any offence. The facts come from the Argentine federal police, the two prosecutors and Uruguayan news outlets that quote them.

How the Uruguay Teen Found in Argentina Was Traced

The girl vanished from her family home in Paysandú, a city in western Uruguay, on the morning of Friday 16 October. Uruguayan police say the family filed the report at about 2:45 p.m. that day.

Uruguay issued an Amber alert in the early hours of Saturday 17 October, and Argentina activated its own child-search alert, Alerta Sofía, on Sunday. Interpol’s Montevideo office also circulated a yellow notice, the agency’s alert for missing persons.

Argentina’s federal police say camera footage from the General Artigas International Bridge, which links Paysandú with Colón in Argentina, shows the girl leaving a vehicle before the migration post. She then continued on foot across the bridge, and no exit from Uruguay was recorded.

The driver, a man with Argentine and Uruguayan citizenship, entered Uruguay at 7:00 a.m. on 16 October and returned to Argentina at 8:15 a.m., the federal police say. Footage shows him as the only occupant of the vehicle on the way back.

A Paysandú court issued an arrest warrant on Saturday 17 October, and Interpol then circulated a red notice, its request to locate and detain a suspect. Detectives in Campana, a city in Buenos Aires Province, found a likely address and watched the house.

A raid on Sunday 18 October ended the search. Detectives rescued the girl and detained the man, and seized a vehicle, two laptops, several mobile phones and documents.

Argentina’s national programme for victims of trafficking assisted the girl, and the Campana municipal children’s service took her into temporary care. Uruguay’s police director, José Azambuya, said on Monday 19 October that she was in “perfect condition”.

What Argentine Prosecutors Say

Federal prosecutor Josefina Minatta of Concepción del Uruguay, the Argentine city handling the case, said the file is provisionally classed as human trafficking. She told Uruguayan broadcasters on Tuesday 20 October that the man heard the charge and the evidence but gave no defence statement.

Minatta said the man ran online escort advertising pages and took commissions from them. That is the prosecutor’s statement, not a court finding, and the suspect is presumed innocent.

She said the contact began through the girl’s family, because the man got close to the girl’s sister and even invited the whole family on a trip. The father became suspicious and cut contact, but the man kept writing to the girl through an online game and WhatsApp, Minatta said.

Minatta said the girl described feeling unwell and low, and accepted what she took to be an offer of help. She said the girl soon realised the place was not what she expected, had to throw away her phone, and felt relief when police arrived.

Minatta also appealed to parents, saying that groups that recruit young people look for teenagers who feel isolated or bullied. She said the girl’s father had told investigators that his daughter was unhappy at school.

The phones, laptops and vehicle will be examined by forensic experts, Minatta said. The girl will give testimony in a Gesell chamber, a special interview room for children, and her return to Paysandú will be authorised after specialists in trafficking cases report.

Uruguay Seeks a Trial at Home

Joaquín Suárez, the prosecutor in Paysandú, wants the man tried in Uruguay, according to Telenoche, and Minatta said he plans to ask for the man’s extradition. Suárez told a news conference on Monday 19 October that the finding is a good result but that the case now enters a new stage of gathering evidence and clarifying how the girl was moved.

Suárez has argued, according to broadcaster Telenoche, that the first possible offence was taking a minor out of Uruguay without her parents’ permission. Minatta said the Argentine side may add a migration offence, because the girl crossed the border without the legal authorisation required for a minor.

Minatta said it is still unclear how the crossing happened without that authorisation. Suárez called the situation one of “enormous risk” and thanked police in both countries for the rapid response.

Azambuya said Argentina placed its federal forces and the Entre Ríos provincial police at Uruguay’s disposal. He called relations with the Argentine authorities excellent.

What It Means for You

Parents in the United States will see a familiar pattern in the prosecutors’ account: first contact through a game, then private messages, then a meeting arranged behind the family’s back. The case shows how quickly a missing-child alert, a border camera and two countries’ police can work together.

Anyone in Argentina can report a suspected trafficking case free and anonymously, around the clock, on the national line 145, which the federal police published with the rescue. Families travelling with minors across the Paysandú-Colón bridge should check the current paperwork rules with the consulate or border authorities before they go.

What Is Not Known

The court files are not public, so the accounts of both prosecutors reach us through the Argentine government release and Uruguayan news outlets that quote them. We could not confirm how many people other than the suspect, if any, are being investigated.

Early Uruguayan reports on Sunday 18 October said the girl was driven across the bridge and gave the man’s age as 38. The Argentine federal police and prosecutor later said she crossed on foot and that he is 37, and this article follows those accounts.

It is not known when or whether the man will be moved to Uruguay, or which country’s court will try him. Nor is it known how the girl passed the crossing with no exit recorded, or whether the checks at the bridge will change.
