Uruguay records in Dezember 7.0% unemployment, the lowest since 2017

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Unemployment in Uruguay fell slightly to 7% in December 2021, the lowest level since December 2017, when it was 6.9%, while employment reached 57.7%, the National Institute of Statistics of Uruguay (INE) reported Tuesday.

In November, unemployment had stood at 7.4% and employment at 57.2%.

According to the INE’s Activity, Employment and Unemployment Technical Bulletin, the South American country’s labor force participation rate was 62% in December, up from 61.8% in November.

In July 2021, unemployment had risen to 10.4% but then began to decline, reaching the current figures.

On the other hand, Uruguay’s capital, Montevideo, registered 59.2% employment and 6.6% unemployment, while the interior had 56.7% employment and 7.3% unemployment.

One of the main differences in the INE register is gender-related, as women have lower employment and higher unemployment than men.
