Uruguay “does not believe in a police state” and will not confine despite resurgence of Covid-19

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Government of Uruguay “does not believe in a police state” and, therefore, will not confine its population despite the resurgence of a new wave of Covid-19, which is leading to a situation close to collapse in the intensive care units of the South American country.

This statement was made this Monday, March 29, by the President of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou, after receiving the first dose of the Chinese vaccine CoronaVac against Covid-19 in a historic hospital in Montevideo.

“The government is not going to establish a compulsory quarantine because it does not believe in a police state. It does not believe that severe security measures should be applied,” he told journalists crowded at the doors of the Maciel Hospital, in the Old City (historic center) of the Uruguayan capital.
