RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Uruguayan delegation that visited Chile to evaluate the condition of the recently decommissioned tug ATF-67 Lautaro expressed that it is in good general condition and that its acquisition would be useful for the Uruguayan Navy.

Uruguay needs to replace the ROU 26 Vanguardia -nearing the end of its useful life- to which must be added the complex situation of the hydrographic vessel ROU 22 Oyarvide, which, although in excellent general condition and with state-of-the-art equipment, has serious engine problems.

MAINTENANCE WORK AT ASMAR

Beyond the evaluation of the vessel by the Uruguayan Navy and the offer of a free transfer from Chile, the work necessary to bring the vessel to complete working order, a task that would be carried out by the Chilean shipyard Asmar, would cost around US$1.5 million.

This cost, which would be insignificant in the international defense market, could be a significant obstacle for the Uruguayan Navy, which has an almost non-existent investment budget.
