Rising Above the Floods: Porto Alegre’s Airport Sets Reopening Timeline

The Salgado Filho Airport in Brazil’s Porto Alegre, out of action since early May, is gearing up for a phased reopening.

This comes after devastating rains and floods wreaked havoc across Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state of Brazil.

Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, announced a staged return to service beginning in October, with the goal of full operation by December.

During a press conference, Costa Filho revealed plans to start with 50 daily flights in October, escalating to a weekly total of 350 flights.

By December, the airport expects to resume full capacity, matching its operational levels prior to the floods.

The closure on May 3rd was a direct result of the torrential rains that overwhelmed the state, causing significant damage.

The floods were deadly, claiming 182 lives, leaving 31 missing, and necessitating the evacuation of over 600,000 people.

The catastrophe affected more than 470 cities and touched the lives of roughly 2.35 million citizens.

Managed by Fraport, a German firm, the airport faced severe challenges with 75% of its runway submerged.

Recovery will occur in two stages: 1.7 kilometers of the runway will reopen in October, with the remaining 2 kilometers in December.
