MetrôRio confirms the R$7.90 price holds through 2026 under the state fare freeze, even though regulator Agetransp homologated an R$8.20 reference fare — the cheaper number is the one you pay. The VLT light rail through Centro costs R$5.00 a ride and drops you a short walk from MAR and the Museu do Amanhã.

Start at Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil (Rua Primeiro de Março 66), which opens at 9am today — Wednesday to Monday, 9am to 8pm, closed Tuesdays. Entry is free and the building is air-conditioned, which makes it the natural anchor for a hot Saturday.

Current shows include “Vik Muniz: A Olho Nu,” running until October 12. Grab coffee at the in-house café when you arrive; the galleries run until 8pm.

Museum Afternoon — Praça Mauá & a Reopened MNBA Wing

Across the plaza, the Museu do Amanhã runs 10am to 6pm, last entry 5pm, at R$40 full and R$20 half (closed Wednesdays). A third option: the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes has partially reopened with free entry — hours can shift during the soft opening, so check gov.br/museus before you go.

Coffee & Light Lunch — Mind the Saturday Closures

Curto Café, the expat favorite at Rua da Assembléia 10, keeps Monday-to-Friday hours only — it is closed on Saturdays, so do not build the morning around it. The fallback in Centro is the CCBB café, or Confeitaria Colombo at Rua Gonçalves Dias 32, open today until 5pm and closed Sundays.

Sofá Café (Rua Conde de Irajá 191, Botafogo) is a cozy reader’s spot, but weekend hours drift — check its Instagram before walking over. For something savory from noon, the botecos along Rua do Lavradio pour cold beer and petiscos in the heart of Lapa’s antique district.

Late Afternoon — Paço Imperial & a Theatro Municipal Tour

The Paço Imperial on Praça XV opens noon to 6pm with free entry — an easy add-on if you are already in Centro. Two blocks away, the Theatro Municipal runs guided tours on Saturdays at 11am and 12:30pm only, at R$20 per person.

Tickets go on sale from 10am at the box office on Avenida 13 de Maio and the two Saturday slots fill early — buy first, then do the Paço while you wait. There are no afternoon Saturday tours, so the “check back later” strategy does not work today.

Evening — Lapa, Santa Teresa or the Urca Mureta

For live samba in a three-story antique-house setting, Rio Scenarium (Rua do Lavradio 20) opens its doors at 8pm — cover varies by night, so check the day’s lineup and budget around R$110 (~US$21) all-in. Earlier and cheaper, Bar do Mineiro (Rua Paschoal Carlos Magno 99, Santa Teresa) has served feijoada and its famous pastéis for over 30 years.

For sunset, head to Bar Urca (Rua Cândido Gaffrée 205) and take a cold beer and the shrimp pie out to the mureta across the street, with Guanabara Bay and the sunset — around 5:42pm — in front of you.

Game Day — Vasco x Cruzeiro Tonight at São Januário

There IS a major Rio match today: Vasco host Cruzeiro at 9:20pm at São Januário in Brasileirão round 25, live on Record, CazéTV and Premiere. The hilltop ground is one of the city’s most atmospheric — arrive early for the neighborhood bars on Rua São Januário.

Tomorrow at 4pm, Flamengo meet Botafogo at the Maracanã, live on TV Globo — the day’s big clássico. If you are streaming from home, Premiere carries both rounds of fixtures; Globo has Sunday’s game free-to-air.
