Race for A.I. Supremacy: How U.S. Investment Outshines Rivals

The United States is making its biggest push yet to stay ahead in artificial intelligence, with $92 billion going into new data centers and power plants.

Top American companies like Google, Blackstone, and CoreWeave have detailed these plans, stating that the goal is to keep leading in AI as China rapidly catches up.

AI needs huge amounts of electricity. Data centers in the US already use more power than any other country, and they will more than double their share of America’s electricity by 2030.

Today, US data centers use about 45 percent of the world’s data center electricity—China uses 25 percent, and all of Europe uses about 15 percent. By comparison, Latin America, Brazil, Russia, or Australia barely register on the chart.

Google is investing $25 billion in American AI infrastructure and another $3 billion to power its centers with hydropower. Blackstone plans to spend $25 billion on building and powering data centers across Pennsylvania.

CoreWeave is putting $6 billion into a single massive AI center. These companies say that if the US cannot provide enough reliable electricity, it risks falling behind China in this critical field.

China is growing fast and could nearly double its own AI power use by 2030, but it still trails the US in both spending and capacity. Japan, South Korea, Israel, and Gulf states have announced AI projects but are nowhere close to matching the huge US numbers.

The US is also trying to speed up the building of power plants by cutting red tape and teaming up with energy companies, often building new data hubs where old power plants used to stand.

This isn’t just about technology. As more jobs and economic growth depend on AI, the country with the biggest and best infrastructure can call the shots.

With this investment, the US wants to make sure it remains the main stage for the world’s data and AI revolution—before anyone else can claim that title.
