RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) will triple the number of ballot boxes audited in October’s general elections when voters choose the majority positions of president and governor as well as senators, federal and state deputies.

The measure was approved yesterday (29th) by the TSE General Assembly.

“The goal is to increase the reach, visibility, and transparency of the entire electoral process,” the court said in a statement.

The ministers met the demands of the members of the Electoral Transparency Commission, including representatives of

  • the Federal Police and the Ministry of Defense, as well as
  • engineers Bruno de Carvalho Albertini, professor at the Department of Computer Engineering and Digital Systems at the University of São Paulo (USP), and
  • Roberto Gallo is a researcher at the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) and president of the Brazilian Association of Defense and Security Industries (Abimde).

It was determined that in the units of the Federation with up to 15,000 polling stations in the electoral roll, 23 polling stations would be selected or randomly chosen, with the first 20 subject to the integrity test and the others to the voting system authenticity test.

In UFs with 15,001 to 30 thousand sections, 35 are selected or randomly chosen. The first 27 ballot boxes are subjected to the integrity test and the remaining eight to the voting system authenticity test.

Forty-three polling stations are selected or chosen at random in the other states. 33 polling stations will be subjected to the integrity check, and the others to the authenticity check of the voting systems.

It was also decided that votes in the electronic ballot box must be cast by an official of the judiciary or the ministry. Previously, the standard only provided that such an order could only be given to an effective official of the electoral court.
