RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The president of the Intersyndical Workers Plenary – National Workers’ Convention (PIT-CNT) Trade Union Center of Uruguay, Marcelo Abdala, stressed on April 18 that the South American nation is experiencing a rise not only in poverty rates but also in social inequality.

According to the labor leader, the price of basic food basket products is increasing in record time, so the act for May 1 will reflect on social construction and the action against inequality and exclusion.

Given the situation, the entity informed the realization of a dialogue between the workers’ party and the Minister of Labor, Pablo Mieres, to promote the collective wage negotiation from July 1, given the possibility of increasing the unemployment rate in the country.

“We want a meeting that looks globally at the issues of labor, salary, prices that make people’s lives and promote ways for them to consume,” specified the president of the PIT-CNT.

He also added that because of the latent social inequality, inflation rates might rise in the country, and he stressed the need to dictate measures to satisfy the basic needs of the Uruguayan population.

“Labor and wages are gears that move the economy as a whole, so that with the July wage adjustments, not only retirees benefit but also the sectors where workers spend their income”, said the union leader.
