Opinion: Colombia’s BRICS invitation – a prelude to South American integration?

(Opinion) In light of recent reports, Colombia stands on the brink of joining the formidable BRICS alliance, currently encompassing the dynamic economies of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

This development naturally stirs the pot, leading many to wonder: Could the entirety of South America soon be aligning with the BRICS nations?

Colombia’s Finance Minister, Ricardo Bonilla, publicly acknowledged the invitation on August 1, emphasizing the global shift towards seeking alternative financial prospects.

“In today’s diverse global landscape, it’s paramount to venture beyond customary financial pathways. BRICS represents such a novel horizon,” remarked Bonilla, highlighting the essential congressional endorsement.

With BRICS nations collectively accounting for over 30% of the world’s GDP, they eclipse even the combined might of the G7.

This surge in prominence isn’t restricted to the South American canvas.
