Navigating the Aftermath: Vale’s R$140 Billion Proposal for Mariana’s Recovery

In 2015, the Mariana dam disaster unleashed one of the most devastating environmental catastrophes in Brazil’s history.

Owned by Samarco—a joint venture between mining giants Vale and BHP—the dam’s collapse killed 19 people and devastated the region.

Now, Vale, BHP Brasil, and Samarco have proposed a R$140 billion ($26 billion) settlement to address the extensive damages.

The new proposal, filed with the Federal Regional Court of the 6th Region, proposes a significant hike from an earlier R$42 billion ($7.85 billion) offer.

It breaks down into three key components:

1. R$37 billion ($6.92 billion) already spent on immediate remediation and compensations.
2. R$82 billion ($15.33 billion) in cash payments, scheduled over 20 years, destined for the federal, Minas Gerais, and Espírito Santo governments and the affected localities.
3. R$21 billion ($3.93 billion) reserved for future commitments.

The stakes are high, with Vale and BHP Brasil acting as secondary debtors. They will cover half of the payments if Samarco falters in its primary debtor role.
