Brazilian President Luis Inácio Lula da Silva has decided to limit commercial agriculture and ban mining in 6 indigenous areas.
Lula declared that he would change the policies of the former far-right president Jair Bolsinaro who encouraged mining in the indigenous territory since he came to power.
Lula declared in Brasilia that the process would take time.
“We are going to win legitimacy in the indigenous territory,” he added.
Within the framework of the decision on the six new indigenous zones, an area of about 620,000 hectares in the Amazon forest will be protected.
Local people will be able to make special use of the natural resources.
The prohibition includes all mining and limits the timber trade and commercial agriculture.
The new reserves are in the country’s northeast, south, and center.
The decision has caused high satisfaction among native leaders, and they have declared that more areas need to be protected.
With this latest decision, deforestation in the Amazon is hoped to be prevented.
