Brazil has seen a sharp and troubling rise in antisemitism since October 2023, according to official data from the Brazilian Israelite Confederation.

After the Hamas attack on Israel that killed about 1,200 people and kidnapped over 250, antisemitic incidents in Brazil jumped by 310%. In 2023, there were 1,774 reported cases, up from 432 the year before.

Many of these incidents happened during protests led by left-wing groups supporting the Palestinian cause. Demonstrators gathered near Jewish centers and universities, displaying banners for Hamas and Hezbollah and chanting for the destruction of Israel.

These acts went beyond political protest, crossing into open hate. Official reports confirm that these protests included symbols of terrorist groups and messages denying Israel’s right to exist.

Universities became flashpoints. Jewish students faced harassment and threats. Some were called “child killers” or saw classmates wear clothing showing terrorist symbols.

School leaders often did little to stop it, allowing the hostility to grow. Data from international monitoring groups shows that Brazil’s universities now report some of the highest increases in antisemitic incidents worldwide.

Political leaders also played a role. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva compared Israel’s actions to those of Nazi Germany, a statement widely condemned by Jewish groups and considered antisemitic by Israel.

Other politicians and influencers called for boycotts of Jewish businesses and made hostile comments online, making antisemitism seem more acceptable in public life.

This surge in hate threatens more than just the Jewish community. Brazil’s Jewish citizens have long been active in business and society. Now, rising hostility puts their safety and participation at risk.

It also damages Brazil’s image as a diverse and open country, raising concerns among international investors and partners. Jewish organizations are responding by tracking incidents and publishing reports.

They are also urging stronger action from authorities. Brazil remains an observer in the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, showing some commitment to fighting hate.

Still, the data shows that left-wing protests and political rhetoric have fueled a dangerous wave of antisemitism, with serious consequences for Brazil’s society and economy.
