Latin America’s Poverty Reaches 33-Year Low, but Challenges Persist

Latin America has made significant strides in reducing poverty, reaching its lowest level in 33 years. The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) reported this milestone in its latest assessment.

However, the region still grapples with persistent inequality and social challenges. In 2023, 27.3% of Latin Americans lived in poverty, down from 28.8% in 2022.

This decrease represents a notable improvement from the pandemic’s peak in 2020. Extreme poverty also fell slightly to 10.6% of the population in 2023.

Brazil played a crucial role in this regional improvement. The country’s poverty reduction efforts accounted for 80% of the overall decline in Latin America.

Brazil’s success stems largely from its expanded social programs, particularly the Bolsa Família cash transfer initiative. Despite these positive trends, significant hurdles remain.

Income inequality continues to plague the region. The Gini index, a measure of income disparity, only decreased slightly from 0.471 to 0.452 between 2014 and 2023.

Wealth Inequality and Economic Challenges

Wealth concentration is even more pronounced, with the top 10% holding 66% of total wealth. The region’s progress in poverty reduction has slowed compared to the early 2000s.

Economic growth, a key driver of poverty alleviation, has weakened in recent years. From 2000 to 2015, Latin America’s economy grew by 2.8% annually on average. This rate dropped to just 0.7% between 2015 and 2023.

Social protection gaps persist across Latin America. In 2022, nearly a quarter of households lacked access to any form of social protection. This vulnerability is more acute among low-income and rural populations.

The labor market presents additional challenges. Informal employment remains widespread, with half of all workers in informal jobs. Many employed individuals still live in poverty or earn below minimum wage.

Half of the workforce does not contribute to pension systems. ECLAC emphasizes the need for comprehensive strategies to address these issues.

The organization calls for strengthening social protection systems and improving labor market conditions. It also stresses the importance of sustained economic growth to create quality jobs.
