Latin American Aviation Soars: Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico Lead Growth

According to the Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association (ALTA), January 2025 marked a historic milestone for aviation in the region with 42.3 million passengers transported, representing a 2.4% growth compared to January 2024.

This growth stems from route reactivation, open-skies policies, and increased international tourism. Domestic traffic played a key role, accounting for 44% of total growth.

Brazil led this segment with 8.6 million passengers, up 5.3% year-over-year, while Argentina and Mexico also showed signs of recovery after months of challenges.

Regional flights between Latin American countries grew by 10.5%, reaching 5.3 million passengers. The Brazil-Chile route increased by 41%, while Ecuador-Panama connections jumped by 53%.

Long-haul connections to Europe grew by 14.6%, and North American routes increased by 10.4%, particularly between Panama and the United States. Total flights in the region reached 345,331, up 4.8%.

Seat capacity grew to 53.8 million (+3.6%), with load factors reaching 84.7%, which is 1.1 percentage points higher than in 2024. Colombia grew by 13.2%, transporting 2.3 million passengers.

Flights between Medellín and Panama increased by 48%, while connections to Peru grew by 36%. The Medellín-Buenos Aires route doubled its frequency to 170 monthly flights.

Brazil saw significant growth on the Florianópolis-Santiago route with a 57% increase in flights. Brazil-Argentina connections grew by 31%, with Florianópolis-Buenos Aires routes surging 175% due to a new airline entry.

The Dominican Republic achieved a record 1.8 million international passengers (+3%). The Bogotá-Punta Cana route grew by 26%, while connections with Panama increased by 12%.

Mexico transported 5.6 million international passengers (+6%). The Mexico City-Dallas route grew by 28%, while connections with Germany increased by 17% thanks to new routes to Tulum and San José del Cabo.

Argentina recorded 1.5 million international passengers (+22%), benefiting from deregulation and market opening. Chile saw a 17.1% increase, reaching 1.2 million passengers, with the Santiago-Mendoza route adding over 110 frequencies.

In domestic traffic, Brazil led with 8.6 million passengers (+5.3%). Colombia handled 2.8 million passengers (+3.5%), with Bogotá-Medellín being the busiest route. Mexico grew by 5.5% to 5.07 million passengers, with airports like Santa Lucía (+78%) showing strong growth.

These figures reflect a positive scenario for Latin American aviation, driven by infrastructure investments, route expansion, and increased tourism demand.
