Israel-Hezbollah Ceasefire: 60-Day Truce Begins

A ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah marks a significant development in the ongoing Middle East conflict. The deal, brokered by the United States and France, aims to end 13 months of hostilities.

It will take effect on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at 4 AM local time. The agreement outlines a 60-day suspension of hostilities.

Hezbollah fighters must withdraw about 40 kilometers from the Israel-Lebanon border. Israeli ground forces will exit Lebanese territory. The deal also calls for implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cited several reasons for pursuing the ceasefire. These include allowing armed forces to focus on Iran and replenishing depleted weapons stocks.

Netanyahu emphasized that Hezbollah has been significantly weakened since the conflict began. The ceasefire comes with strict conditions imposed by Israel.

It prohibits Hezbollah from rebuilding military infrastructure in southern Lebanon. Israel retains the right to respond militarily to any violations. This stance could potentially reignite hostilities and jeopardize diplomatic efforts.

Ceasefire Agreement in Middle East

U.S. President Joe Biden announced the ceasefire, stating it is “designed to be a permanent cessation of hostilities”. The agreement has gained international support from the U.S., France, and other nations.

However, concerns remain about its long-term success and implementation. The conflict has taken a heavy toll on both sides. Over 3,000 Lebanese have died, with 13,492 injured since hostilities began.

In Israel, 72 people have died from Hezbollah‘s attacks. The violence has displaced over 1.2 million people in Lebanon and 60,000 in northern Israel. Despite the ceasefire, the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire.

Over 43,000 Palestinians have been killed and 101,000 injured. Nearly 1.9 million people have been displaced. In addition, the region faces severe shortages of food, water, and medical supplies.

The ceasefire does not address the ongoing conflict in Gaza. This omission raises questions about the broader implications for regional stability. The agreement’s success will depend on both parties’ adherence and the international community’s support.
