Interpol warns of Chile’s “special attractiveness” to international criminal gangs

Last week, the Investigative Police (PDI) held the International Summit on Innovation and New Challenges in Transnational Organized Crime (Crime Organize Summit) to strengthen the fight against criminal groups and gangs.

On the first day, President Gabriel Boric and the Minister of the Interior, Izkia Siches, participated in the opening of the Interpol General Assembly in Espacio Riesco, with the representation of some of the police that make up the organization from Australia, Dubai, Spain, Brazil, and the FBI of the United States.

Thus, the international institutions shared their best practices in this field, some of which could be replicated by the national police in a context in which crimes of a particularly violent and organized nature are increasing, linked to groups such as the Aragua Train in Chile.

At the event, the Director General of the PDI, Sergio Muñoz, pointed out that “today crime does not recognize borders; therefore, this type of event allows us to connect with what is happening in the world in terms of new criminal modalities that will at some point reach the country”.

For his part, the PDI’s Deputy Director of Criminal Networks, José de Gracia, mentioned “the indirect – and sometimes direct – influence of Mexican clans and cocaine production, especially from Colombia”.

Regarding Chile’s “special attractions” that attract these gangs, Interpol said that the country “faces the sea, has traffic and important maritime ports where container ships move many types of substances, especially cocaine”.

On the other hand, he highlighted the work of the local police, assuring that “they are an example from the point of view of the fight against organized crime, and we base a lot of our efforts on what you do here”.
