Inflation reaches 12.73% in Brazilian capitals in 2021: the ranking
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Inflation exceeded 10% in 10 of the 16 capitals and metropolitan regions surveyed in 2021 by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics).
Curitiba (Paraná) was the city with the highest variation in the IPCA (Extended National Consumer Price Index): 12.73%.
According to the IBGE’s report, released on Tuesday, January 11, Curitiba’s result was driven by the 51.78% increase in gasoline prices. In 2020, the city registered an IPCA of 3.95%.
The second highest inflation last year was registered in Vitória (Espírito Santo): 11.50%. Rio Branco (Acre) comes third, with 11.43%.
Other capitals and metropolitan regions with an IPCA above 10% were: Porto Alegre (10.99%), Campo Grande (10.92%), Salvador (10.78%), Fortaleza (10.63%), Recife (10.42%), Goiânia (10.31%) and Aracaju (10.14%).
Belém (Pará) posted the lowest inflation in 2021: 8.10%. However, the increase was higher than in 2020 (4.63%).
São Paulo, the country’s most populous city, registered an IPCA of 9.59%. Nationwide, the indicator increased by 10.06% last year. It is the highest IPCA variation in Brazil since 2015 (10.67%).
