A CEBC (Brazil-China Business Council) study published this Tuesday (Feb.7.2023) showed that Brazil’s exports to China had the highest growth among Brazil’s main trade partners from 2012 to 2021.

During the period, national exports to the Asian giant grew, in value, 5 times more than to the rest of the world.

According to the survey, the Chinese share in Brazil’s international sales jumped to 31.3% in 2021.

Read below the evolution of the historical series (2012-2021):

International trade expert Fabrizio Panzini wrote the Brazil-China Business Council study.

It was sponsored by paper producer Klabin and supported by Ipea (Institute for Applied Economic Research) and Cepal (Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean).

EXPORTS BY REGIONS

The increase of exports to China registered in the 5 Brazilian regions was also higher than their total sales to other countries in the period, according to the CEBC.

The highest increases were in the North (14.6%) and South (9.0%). The lowest expansion rate was in the Southeast, with a 6.9% growth.

In a comparison between 2012 and 2021, the North is the region (52.8%) with the highest Chinese participation in international sales, while the Southeast has the lowest (20.2%).

Read below the data by region:

The Brazil-China Business Council survey says that the North region has the highest potential for a percentage increase in exports (125.8%) to the Asian country and the 2nd about growth in values (US$11.7 billion) by 2030.

The Southeast is in 1st position, with US$ 9.2 billion.

The Midwest and the South, on the other hand, have the lowest potential for percentage growth in sales to China by 2030: 48.6% and 42.1%, respectively.

The Northeast would have a “considerable” percentage of opportunity (76.8%), according to the CEBC survey.

EXPORTS BY STATES

The “Exports from Brazilian States to China” study also indicated a concentration of exports from most of Brazil’s federal units to the Asian country in the last decade.

According to the Brazil-China Business Council, 21 of the 27 states had an increase in their exports to the Asian giant greater than the expansion of their sales to other countries from 2012 to 2021.

For 15 of these, the average sales growth was above the national rate of 8.8%.

For 19 federative units, China was the main export destination in 2021.

Here are the 5 states with the highest growth of exports to China above the average for Brazil:

  • Rondônia (39.6%);
  • Piauí (30.1%);
