Hacking of Chilean military’s emails reveals sensitive information about Alberto Fernández

A hack of the emails of Chile’s top military officials has revealed intelligence information about Argentina’s President Alberto Fernandez.

According to Infobae, the leak reveals high-level commanders’ concerns about Fernandez’s possible “expansionist” policies, his interference in Chilean political affairs, and his role in organizing a leftist axis in the region.

The documents, originally published on hacking websites, have caused a stir in the government of President Gabriel Boric, who, during his visit to the UN General Assembly in New York, instructed his defense minister, Maya Fernández, to take immediate action and order an investigation “to guide the response to these events.”

The leak suggests that President Fernández generates concerns in the Chilean military at a geopolitical level, as he could take advantage of Boric’s recent statement that “there are no borders in Patagonia” to create “a potential argument for Argentina’s strategy on the Southern Ice Fields, the Strait of Magellan and the Extended Continental Shelf”.

The Argentine president’s ties to the regional left are also exposed.

For example, he is said to be collaborating with Lula da Silva’s assault on power in Brazil and forming an “axis” with leftist Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to fight social inequality in the Americas.

In published intelligence, Peronism is described by Chilean forces as a dangerous political movement with “nationalist character, expansionist and hegemonic characteristics.”

The hacking also highlighted the active role Fernández played during the government of former President Sebastián Piñera in meetings with “opposition leaders of the Chilean left.”
